Human Rights Council
The Human Rights Council (HRC) is the principal intergovernmental body within the United Nations responsible for strengthening the promotion and protection of human rights worldwide. Established in 2006 by the General Assembly to replace the Commission on Human Rights, it comprises 47 Member States elected by secret ballot for three-year terms. The Council serves as a multilateral forum to address human rights violations, adopting resolutions and convening special sessions to respond to emergencies. Its key mechanisms include the Universal Periodic Review, which assesses every UN member state's human rights record every 4.5 years, and the Special Procedures, independent experts who monitor country and thematic situations.
